Three Hoyas Earn Women’s Basketball BIG EAST Postseason Honors - Georgetown University Athletics (2024)

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team earned a program-record three BIG EAST Conference major awards and one all-conference honor on Thursday when the league announced its postseason awards. Senior guard Kelsey Ransom was named the BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year as well as being selected First Team All-BIG EAST. Additionally, for the second year in a row, graduate student Graceann Bennett won the BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award. Junior forward Brianna Scott rounded out the Hoya honorees winning the BIG EAST Sixth-Woman Award.

The Hoyas have secured the No. 6 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP and will face 11th-seeded Xavier this Friday at 4 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Co-Defensive Player of the Year
First Team All-BIG EAST

  • Ransom anchored a Georgetown defense which enters the postseason ranked 13th nationally, allowing just 54.9 points per game.
  • GU's opponents shoot on average just 37.3 percent to rank in the top 40 among all Division I teams.
  • Ransom averages 2.2 steals per game to rank fifth in the BIG EAST, while the 157 career steals she collected in BIG EAST play rank 17th all-time.
  • On the offensive end of the floor, the team captain leads the Hoyas in scoring averaging 13.9 points per game to rank 14th in the league in scoring, as well as fifth in assists with 5.2 assists per game to her credit.
  • She was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on February 26 after scoring a career-high 31 points in a win over Butler. Ransom has also been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll five times this season and nine times in her career.
  • In October, she was selected as a Preseason All-BIG EAST honoree.
  • Overall, Ransom sits among the Georgetown leaders in points with 1,293 (12th), assists (394, 8th), steals (247, 7th) and rebounds pulling down 554 (24th).
  • This is the third time in program history a Hoya has earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Previous winners include Dionna White (2017-18) and Rebekkah Brunson (2003-04).
  • The last Hoya to receive a nod to the first team was Dionna White at the conclusion of the 2018-19 campaign.
  • Ransom has previously earned postseason honors being named Honorable Mention All-BIG EAST a season ago, and earning a spot on the All-Freshman Team as a rookie.

Graceann Bennett
Sportsmanship Award

  • Bennett is the first two-time BIG EAST Sportsmanship Award recipient after being recognized in 2022-23 as well. She is also the only Hoya to ever receive the honor.
  • The graduate student forward is a leader for the Hoyas on and off the court.
  • Bennett is a three-time team captain that ranks second on the squad in scoring, averaging 9.5 points per game which ranks 25th in the conference. She also averages 10.0 in BIG EAST play.
  • Bennett leads the Hoyas in rebounding with 7.2 per game, including 7.4 against conference foes.
  • She earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on January 8 after some big performances including 20 points against Butler and a double-double in a loss to UConn.
  • In her career, she has tallied 96 blocks to rank eighth in Hoya history, and also has 655 rebounds to sit at 14th overall.
  • A stalwart for the Blue & Gray, Bennett has appeared in 126 career games making her fifth all-time.
  • Off the court, she founded Georgetown Hoyos which is a women's sports affinity group specifically for female varsity athletes.
  • Bennett has worked with the Voice in Sport Foundation for the past three years as she champions raising the bar for women's sports.

Brianna Scott
Sixth-Woman Award

  • Scott came off the bench in all 26 games she appeared in this year but still managed to finish third on the team in scoring at 8.8 points per game.
  • Her rebounding average of 6.0 per game ranked 14th among all BIG EAST players, while her field goal percentage (.500) listed eighth, and blocks per game ranked fourth (1.4).
  • She earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on December 11 after scoring 21 points in a win at Colgate.
  • Already, she sits among GU's career leaders in blocks with 77 to rank 11th all-time. She is also approaching the top 25 in 3-pointers made with 50 in her career.
  • The junior forward boasted career-best numbers across the board, increasing her scoring average by over three points, rebounding clip by nearly two boards per game, and bumping her shooting average from .398 to .500 between last year and this year.
  • Scott is the first Hoya to earn the Sixth-Woman Award.
